Fissures

An anal fissure is a small tear in the lining of the anus that causes pain, discomfort, and bleeding during or after bowel movements. It is a common condition often linked to constipation, hard stools, or excessive straining.

Treatments

  • Medications – Pain-relieving ointments, stool softeners, and topical creams to relax anal muscles and promote healing.
  • Sitz Baths – Warm water baths to relieve pain and improve blood flow for faster healing.
  • Botox Injections – Used in chronic cases to relax the anal sphincter muscles and reduce spasms.
  • Surgical Treatment – Lateral Internal Sphincterotomy (LIS) or laser surgery in cases where conservative treatments fail.

Symptoms and Causes

Symptoms:

  • Sharp pain during or after bowel movements
  • Bright red blood in stool or on tissue
  • Itching or irritation around the anus
  • Visible tear or crack near the anus
  • Spasms in the anal sphincter

Causes:

  • Chronic constipation or straining
  • Passing hard or large stools
  • Prolonged diarrhea
  • Childbirth-related trauma
  • Tight anal sphincter muscles

Prevention

  • Eat a fiber-rich diet to prevent constipation
  • Stay hydrated by drinking enough water daily
  • Avoid excessive straining during bowel movements
  • Exercise regularly to maintain bowel health
  • Practice good toilet habits and avoid delaying bowel urges
