Rectal Polyps

Rectal polyps are abnormal tissue growths on the lining of the rectum. While most are non-cancerous, some types can develop into colorectal cancer if left untreated. They often do not cause symptoms initially, which is why timely screening and removal are important for long-term health.

Treatments

  • Polypectomy – Removal of polyps during colonoscopy using special tools.
  • Surgical Removal – For larger or complex polyps that cannot be removed endoscopically.
  • Surveillance Colonoscopy – Regular check-ups to prevent recurrence or detect new polyps early.

Symptoms and Causes

Symptoms:

  • Rectal bleeding or blood in stool
  • Change in bowel habits (diarrhea/constipation)
  • Abdominal pain or cramping
  • Mucus discharge from rectum
  • Often no symptoms (found during routine check)

Causes:

  • Genetic mutations affecting cell growth
  • Family history of colorectal cancer or polyps
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Unhealthy diet (low-fiber, high-fat)
  • Age above 50 years

Prevention

  • Eat a high-fiber, low-fat diet rich in fruits and vegetables
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
  • Maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly
  • Get regular colonoscopy screenings after age 45 or earlier with family history
  • Manage chronic conditions like IBD effectively
