Hernia

A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. It most commonly appears in the abdominal wall, causing a noticeable bulge. Hernias may cause pain, discomfort, or complications if left untreated, and they usually require surgical repair.

Treatments

Lifestyle Adjustments – Avoid heavy lifting, manage weight, and treat chronic cough or constipation.
Medications – To manage symptoms like heartburn in cases of hiatal hernia.
Surgical Repair – Open or laparoscopic hernia repair with mesh to strengthen the weak area.
Emergency Surgery – Required if the hernia becomes strangulated (cutting off blood supply).

Symptoms and Causes

Symptoms:

Visible bulge or swelling in the abdomen or groin
Pain or discomfort while coughing, bending, or lifting
Heaviness, burning, or aching sensation at the hernia site
Nausea, vomiting, or severe pain in case of strangulated hernia

Causes:

Weakness in abdominal muscles (present at birth or developed later)
Heavy lifting, chronic coughing, or constipation
Obesity or sudden weight gain
Previous abdominal surgery causing weak spots

Prevention

Maintain a healthy weight with proper diet and exercise
Avoid heavy lifting or learn correct lifting techniques
Treat chronic cough, constipation, or prostate issues early
Quit smoking to improve tissue strength and healing
