Pilonidal Sinus

Pilonidal sinus is a small cyst or tunnel in the skin, usually located near the tailbone at the top of the buttocks. It often contains hair, dirt, and skin debris, which can cause pain, swelling, and discharge if it becomes infected. Pilonidal sinus is more common in young men, people who sit for long hours, or those with thick body hair.

Treatments

Antibiotics – To control infection, though they cannot cure the sinus completely.
Incision & Drainage – Minor procedure to release pus and relieve pain.
Laser Surgery – Minimally invasive option for faster recovery and lower recurrence.
Surgical Excision – Complete removal of the sinus tract to prevent recurrence.

Symptoms and Causes

Symptoms:

Pain or swelling near the tailbone
Redness and tenderness in the area
Pus or blood discharge from the sinus opening
Foul smell from the discharge
Fever in case of severe infection

Causes:

Ingrown hair in the cleft of the buttocks
Prolonged sitting or sedentary lifestyle
Excess body hair or coarse hair growth
Skin irritation, friction, or trauma in the area

Prevention

Maintain good hygiene and keep the area clean & dry
Remove excess hair regularly to prevent ingrowth
Avoid prolonged sitting or take breaks frequently
Maintain healthy body weight to reduce pressure in the area
Wear loose, breathable clothing to minimize sweating
